Our Statement on the Fort Langley Rainbow Crosswalk
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Statement from the Langley Pride Society Board of Directors
The Langley Pride Society Board of Directors was contacted earlier this week by Councillor Tim Baillie regarding a motion he intends to bring forward concerning the Pride crosswalk in Fort Langley.
We are deeply disappointed by the proposed motion. Since its installation in September 2017, the Pride crosswalk has become a longstanding and beloved symbol of inclusivity and acceptance within the Fort Langley community. It represents not only the values of diversity and unity but also the resilience of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.
While we acknowledge that acts of vandalism targeting Pride crosswalks have occurred across Canada—including in Fort Langley—such actions only serve to strengthen our resolve. We will not be deterred by hate. Instead, we stand proud, united, and committed to rebuilding and enhancing what others seek to destroy.
It is important to remember the significance of the original rainbow flag designed by Gilbert Baker. Each color holds meaning: Red symbolizes life, Orange represents healing, Yellow stands for sunlight, Green symbolizes nature, Turquoise represents magic and art, Indigo signifies harmony, and Violet represents spirit
These values continue to guide and inspire our work.
In discussions with Councillor Baillie, the Langley Pride Society was informed that his motion is being proposed due to ongoing concerns related to vandalism and the associated maintenance costs. He has suggested that the existing Pride crosswalk be replaced with artwork reflecting the historical heritage of Fort Langley. However, he also assured us that he would advocate for meaningful consultation with the Langley Pride Society before any removal occurs. Furthermore, he committed to supporting the installation of a new Pride crosswalk elsewhere in the Township—one that would be both visible and hopefully less subject to intentional defacement.
As a result, the Langley Pride Society plans to engage with the 2SLGBTQIA+ community in Langley to identify potential locations for a new Pride crosswalk. These community-driven suggestions will be formally presented to the Township of Langley Council in the spirit of collaboration and inclusivity.
We remain steadfast in our mission to celebrate Pride and ensure that symbolic representations of our community continue to hold a visible and respected place in the Township of Langley.
